ALTOONA-MIDWAY HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL

OSWEGO – The Altoona-Midway Lady Jets saw their 2019 volleyball season come to a close as they were defeated in the opening round of the Class 1A Regional Tournament held here Tuesday.

The St. Paul Lady Indians ended the AMHS fall campaign, as they eliminated the Lady Jets in straight sets, 25-13, 25-8.

Natalie Davis led the effort for Altoona-Midway with a block, an ace and a dig. Alyssa Relph also recorded an ace, while Shia Bennett and Emma Martin were credited with digs for the Lady Jets.

AMHS ended the season with a 1-31 record.

“The girls came out very nervous tonight,” said AMHS head coach Bryn Dick. “They were timid and second guessed themselves and their teammates. Despite that, I am very proud of how the girls handled themselves with all the challenges they faced on and off the court this season.

“Natalie Davis proved to be a leader when we very much needed one,” Dick continued. “Abby Reaves, Alyssa Relph, and Mariah Stackhouse put up some great blocks and Abi Elsesser was a huge asset in the back row and came up with some big digs for us.         “I'm excited to see what these girls can make happen in the next season.”

St. Paul was eliminated in the semifinals by the host Oswego squad. Top-seeded Chetopa then ousted Oswego to claim the regional championship.

Both Chetopa and Oswego will now advance to the sub-state tournament Saturday, held at Rosalia-Flinthills High School. The winner there will advance to the Class 1A State Volleyball Tournament, Nov. 1-2 at Dodge City.
