It was definitely not the start to the season that was anticipated.

Altoona-Midway High School opened its 2018 football season here Friday but was soundly defeated 50-0 by Cedar Vale-Dexter High School.

“We started very slow, almost like a daze,” said AMHS head football coach Joe Arell. “As the game went on we did see signs of improvement.

“We’re still not set on a couple of positions – key positions that need to be addressed soon,” he added. “But we’re still a young team and if anybody can bounce back from a loss like that, it’ll definitely be us.”

Junior running back Jimmy Willard amassed about 50 yards of offense for the Jets, while freshman Jackson Ashmore racked up over 50 yards passing. The AMHS defense was led by Willard and sophomore Josh Meigs.

No other information from the game was available.

The Jets (0-1) will try to regroup this Friday as they host Maranatha Christian Academy. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
