ALTOONA-MIDWAY MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL

YATES CENTER – The Altoona-Midway Middle School volleyball team opened its 2020 fall campaign on the road Thursday afternoon, dropping both sets in a closely-contested match with the host Yates Center Lady Wildcats.

Altoona-Midway lost the first set 25-12, and then played nip-and-tuck with Yates Center in an exciting second contest before falling 26-24.

AMMS head coach Nikki Almond missed the opener due to having had possible contact for another individual who tested positive for Covid-19. However, she was happy with the report she received from assistant coach Tracey Winder and from Chary Weilert, who has stepped in to help during Almond’s absence.

“I am super proud of these girls,” Almond said. “I hated not being there, but the report from Tracey and Chary was very encouraging.

“They only had three serving errors, which is already such an improvement from last year.  I cannot wait to see what they will bring to the court this season.”

Limited stats were available from the contest. Abby Relph and Olivia Goodwin both had one ace, while Relph and Lexyn Bracken each recorded a dig.

Lady Jets will return to action Tuesday, traveling to Thayer. Coach Almond is expected to return to the squad later next week.
