ALTOONA-MIDWAY HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
BUFFALO – The Altoona-Midway High School Jets ended the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule on a high note, waltzing to a 75-40 victory over the Tyro Christian Eagles in a non-conference affair played Friday night at Milo Peterson Gymnasium.
There was no girls’ contest Friday.
“We did a great job of attacking their zone defense,” said AMHS head coach Lane Huffman. “We practiced driving baseline and quick passing all week in order to make their defense have to move. As a result, we got a lot of good looks. We shot 83 percent as a team from inside the three-point line.”
Jackson Ashmore turned in a great all-around game, pouring in a game-high 23 points and also setting up his teammates to score.
Alex Troutman picked up the scoring void created when fellow Jet senior Josh Meigs had to miss the game due to an ankle injury. Troutman rattled the twine for 20 points and also hauled down six rebounds.
The Jets also received an outstanding performance from freshman Jacob Meigs, who shot a perfect six-for-six from the floor and finished with 14 points. Dalton Smith also reached double digits with 10, while Andy Tiger and Zeek Roby rounded out the scoring with six and two points, respectively.
Altoona-Midway led from start to finish, as the Jets were up 19-11 at the quarter, 41-21 at the half, and 62-33 after three periods.
Defensively we are still struggling, but we are making improvements each game,” Huffman said. “If our defense improves, we have a chance to be very successful in our league during the 2021 portion of our season.”
AMHS and Tyro Christian also squared off in a shortened junior varsity contest, with the Jets winning 19-15. Freshman Lane Poeverlein led the victors with 14 points.

Livestreaming if tonights hs basketball game begins at 5:00 PM. 1 boys varsity and 2 quarters of boys JV.

ALTOONA-MIDWAY MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL
BUFFALO – Make it two wins in a row for the Altoona-Midway Middle School boys’ basketball team.
Playing at home for the first time this season, the Jets ran their winning streak to two games as they notched a 32-20 victory over Thayer Middle School. Meanwhile, the Lady Flyers made it a split of the evening as they defeated AMMS 27-4 in the opening contest at Milo Peterson Gymnasium.
AMMS Boys
Holding a precarious 15-14 lead at halftime, Altoona-Midway dominated the third period, outscoring the Flyers 11-2 to build a commanding 26-16 lead entering the final period.
Thayer was able to cut the lead to 27-20 with under two minutes remaining, but an old fashioned three-point play by Kieran Foster pushed the cushion back to double digits and the Jets secured the victory.
William Stackhouse led the AMMS offense with 11 points, while Foster was right behind him with 10 points. Aaron Maple finished with six points for the Jets.
Stackhouse also pulled down eight rebounds and had five steals, while Foster hauled in 13 rebounds for the Jets. Joey Lamendola handed out three assists.
In the absence of head coach Jeff Almond, the Jet boys were once again directed by AMMS principal Darrin Ashmore, along with Lady Jets’ coach Michelle Morales.
“Both Darrin Ashmore and I are proud of the boys for playing hard and smart tonight,” Morales said. “Our defense was looking the best it’s been so far this season and on offense they were slowing down and running the plays. It’s been such a joy to coach these young men and see the improvement in such a short amount of time. They work great as a team on the court.”
Altoona-Midway now stands at 2-3 overall, but the Jets are 2-0 in Mineral Belt League play.
The boys’ jayvee squads played a half Monday night. The Jets JV led 7-4 after the quarter, but Thayer rallied to win 19-14. Lamendola and Maple scored six points each for AMMS and Taj O’Conner netted two.
AMMS Girls
In the first game of the evening, The Lady Jets were unable to get anything going offensively as Thayer coasted to a 27-4 victory.
The Lady Flyers jumped to an 11-0 lead after just one period. The AMMS defense stiffened after that, allowing just 16 points over the final three periods, but were able to notch just one basket in each half.
“We had another slow start tonight,” Lady Jets head coach Michelle Morales noted. “The girls did better in the second half but just couldn't get points. We are working on taking our open shots and not hesitating.
“But the girls have improved since Day 1 and they are starting to use what we have been teaching them,” she added. “We will be practicing hard this week for our game Thursday.”
Alexis Foudray tallied all four points for Altoona-Midway. Emmalynn Pupanek grabbed three rebounds, and Lexyn Bracken had two steals.
The Lady Jets are now 0-4 overall, 0-2 in Mineral Belt League action.

The USD 387 District Office will be closed tomorrow from 10:30 AM to approximately 1:00 PM.

SATURDAY, Dec. 5, 2020
ALTOONA-MIDWAY HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
BUFFALO – Nice start, coach.
Lane Huffman, in his first season as head coach of the Altoona-Midway High School boys’ basketball team, saw his troops turn in a well-rounded performance in a 46 42 victory over Hartford, providing the Jets new coach a victory in their season-opener here Friday night at Milo Peterson Gymnasium.
In the meantime, the Lady Jets will have to wait to get their season under way. There was no girls’ contest Friday due to a quarantine issue with the Hartford Lady Jaguars.
Altoona-Midway and Hartford were knotted at 18 at the half. The Jets went up by six after three periods, and then withstood a couple of late runs by the Jags.
Senior Josh Meigs poured in 20 points to pace the AMHS attack, while junior Jackson Ashmore also reached double figures with 10, and junior Dalton Smith added seven points.
“Our offense and defense were led by our captains, Josh and Jackson,” said Coach Huffman, an AMHS alum who served as an assistant coach before taking over the reins this season. “They both hit big shots and got steals when it mattered.”
But Huffman was quick to add the victory was a total team effort.
“We got into early foul trouble, and I was impressed with our bench play,” Huffman noted. “We truly had a “next-guy-up’ mentality. Everybody stepped up and made a play.
“Chase Nalley hit a shot to tie the game just before halftime, Alex Troutman hit a three during the key third-quarter surge, and sophomore Andy Tiger came off the bench and provided some great minutes late, hitting a shot and grabbing some important rebounds,” Huffman added.
After Hartford closed the gap to 40-37 with under three minutes remaining, Meigs took the game over.
The senior captain, who played every minute of the game, made three-of-four free throws and then added an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Jets up 46-37 with less than a minute to play. Despite the Jaguars scoring the final five points, AMHS claimed the four-point win.
The teams also played a two-quarter jayvee contest, with Hartford winning 17-7.
The Marais des Cygnes Valley Tournament slated Dec. 8-11 has been cancelled, so the Jets next action will come Thursday, Dec. 10, at Leroy, where they will square off against Southern Coffey County. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. with a boys’ JV half, followed by the girls’ varsity and then the boys’ varsity.

The HS BB games against Hartford will be video'd and on our Facebook page this evening, start time 6:30 pm.

ALTOONA-MIDWAY HIGH SCHOOL Sunday, Nov. 15, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Three from Altoona-Midway named
to All-Three Rivers League squads
BUFFALO – Three athletes from Altoona-Midway High School were honored recently by being named as all-Three Rivers League selections in their respective sports.
AMHS senior Joshua Meigs was tabbed on three separate units of the All-TRL football squad, while senior Natalie Davis and junior Mariah Stackhouse were both chosen as honorable mention choices for the league’s elite volleyball unit.
Making this announcement even more impressive was the fact that the Altoona-Midway fall sports teams were forced to cancel a large portion of their seasons in early October. Their seasons were cut short when USD 387 officials closed on-site learning for two weeks due to COVID-19 regulations which required a large number of the district’s students to be quarantined.
Meigs was a do-everything performer during the Jets abbreviated football season, and the rest of the league took notice. Meigs was tabbed first-team All-TRL as a special teams’ returner; and was also named honorable mention all-league as both a running back on offense and as a linebacker on defense.
“I was so excited to see that Josh was recognized very well among the league coaches even though we were only able to play four games this year,” said Jets head coach Chad Raida. “This is a huge accomplishment for Josh considering our shortened season.
“Josh is what kept our team together though all the things we have experienced this year,” Raida added. “For the coaches in our league to show their respect for him like they did, shows how tremendous an athlete he is.
“He will most definitely be missed by his teammates, school, and coaches. We wish him nothing but the best.”
Davis and Stackhouse were both selected to the honorable mention All-TRL volleyball squad for their contributions to the Lady Jets.
“Natalie had a great senior season even though it was cut short due to an ankle injury on our Sept. 22 home match. Then just as she was about to suit up and play again, our entire team had to quarantine ending our season early,” noted AMHS head coach Michelle Morales. “But even though she had a short season, Natalie was one of the leading middle blockers in our league with 22 single blocks. She also had 18 digs, 41 serves and 5 aces, 13 assists and 29 kills. She will be missed next year.”
Stackhouse led the Lady Jets in serves, aces, and kills, ending her season with 82 serves, 18 aces, and 36 kills. Her other stats included 48 digs, six single blocks, and 34 assists.
“Mariah was our best all-around player and leader on the court this season,” Morales said. “If you were lucky enough to see one of our games, she was the one on the court that you could hear. She was always loud and encouraging. I am so proud of Mariah for stepping up and being a great captain and leader for our team.”

Yesterday evening I attended the High School All League Nominations. I am proud to announce to you that Natalie Davis and Mariah Stackhouse both made All League Honorable Mention. I am so happy I was able to coach this team this year. Their improvement was remarkable and I am already excited for next years season!
Thank You,
Coach M

Kansas Eviction Prevention Program could help families of students
Newsroom, Local Boards, Student Issues, Safety and Security
Education leaders are encouraged to get the word out about applying for a program that could help some students and their families who are facing economic difficulties because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Kansas Eviction Prevention Program provides up to $5,000 in rental assistance per tenant household.
“Home has never been more important,” said Ryan Vincent, executive director of the Kansas Housing Resources Corp., which administers the KEPP. “Our homes have always provided shelter, but in the midst of the COVID pandemic, home has become our virtual workplace, classroom, marketplace, and gathering space. This program will protect Kansans’ access to home when it is needed most.”
Through the program, landlords and tenants apply for up to $5,000 per household to cover delinquent rental payments dating back to April 1, 2020. Payments will be made directly to the landlord, who must agree not to evict the household for nonpayment of rent or to charge late fees for the months KEPP assistance is received.
Program funds are limited to $35 million, and applications will be processed in the order received. Tenants and landlords should apply as soon as possible to increase their likelihood of receiving assistance. Visit kshousingcorp.org to learn more and apply online, or contact kepp@kshousingcorp.org for assistance.
The economic impact of the pandemic has left many Kansans unemployed or underemployed, uncertain how they will pay rent. While moratoriums provide temporary protection from eviction, rent continues to accrue each month, leaving tenants unsure how they will pay arrears, and leaving landlords without monthly income to pay bills and manage maintenance and upkeep. Data indicates that 117,000-155,000 Kansas households (30-44% of all rental households), including many families with students in our schools, will be at risk of eviction in the coming months due to COVID.
The KEPP is funded through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, authorized by Gov. Laura Kelly’s Strengthening People and Revitalizing Kansas (SPARK) Taskforce. The program serves tenants and landlords who have missed paying or collecting at least one rent payment since April 1, 2020, due to the COVID pandemic.
The Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC) is a self-supporting, nonprofit, public corporation committed to helping Kansans access the safe, affordable housing they need and the dignity they deserve. KHRC serves as the primary administrator of federal housing programs for the state of Kansas.

The High School drama practice will begin on Monday, September 28 from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. We will present Birds of a Feather on November 6, 2020, at 1 pm and 7 pm.
We will meet every day M - F from 6:00 - 7:30 unless a school event prohibits practice (teacher conferences for example). Wednesday, September 30 will NOT be a practice due to Mrs. Dvorachek's absence from school.
A permission slip and schedule for middle school drama students helping backstage or on stage will be emailed to students on Friday evening, posted on Google Classroom (Drama), and in addition, sent home on Monday. Middle School students will need to have the permission slip completed before attending drama practice.
Students will need to get to drama practice and get home from drama practice on their own- buses do not run at those times.
High School drama students need to attend as often as possible - it is understandable that work, sports, and family events will come up. The play is a little over one month away, so every minute in practice is crucial.

ALTOONA-MIDWAY SCHOOL DISTRICT Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BUFFALO - The Altoona-Midway School District has announced that the high school football game scheduled this Friday at Oswego has been canceled, due to low numbers available for the Jets squad.
School officials announced the decision was not related to Covid-19 concerns.
"We only have 11 players on our entire roster this season," noted Altoona-Midway activities director Jeff Almond. "We ran into a problem having enough players available for action this week. Therefore, we unfortunately had to contact Oswego and cancel."
Altoona-Midway is scheduled to resume play Friday, Sept. 25, at Chetopa.

Thank you to all of our amazing Yearbook supporters.
The 2019-2020 USD 387 Altoona-Midway Yearbook has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but will be available before Thanksgiving.

MS football should read the 17th. Not the 21st or the 18th.

The previous notification had the wrong date. It should have said September 18, not the 21st. Sorry about that folks!

On Thursday, Sept. 21, the middle school football team will play Crest. This game will be played in Yates Center beginning at 6:00 PM.
Here are the Covid -19 guidelines that YC will use for their outdoor events:
"We recommend that all spectators wear masks while entering the stadium, exiting the stadium at the concession stand and bathrooms.
Admission will be free at Middle School games.
Social distancing where possible, we encourage families to sit in clusters and leave distance between families. Parents please keep small children with you to ensure their safety.
Lawn chairs will be permitted in designated areas to promote social distancing.
Frequent hand washing or sanitizing
We encourage you to stay home if you are not feeling well or have been in contact with someone who is not feeling well."

Unfortunately, due to low numbers on our part, the football game scheduled this Friday night, September 18, against Oswego has been canceled.

ALTOONA-MIDWAY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
BUFFALO – Yates Center High School is finding out that sometimes less is more.
Yates Center, dropping down from 11-man football to the 8-man version this season, found that to be to its liking Friday night, rolling to a 56-8 victory over Altoona-Midway High School here at Frank Kennedy Field.
It was also Homecoming for AMHS. Miss Natalie Davis was crowned as the 2020 homecoming queen for Altoona-Midway, and Joshua Meigs was selected as homecoming king.
Unfortunately, the homecoming ceremonies provided most of the highlights of the evening for the hosts. The Jets only score came on a 20-yard pass from Josh Meigs to Brandon Johnson. The duo also combined for a pass to complete the two-point PAT.
Meigs led the Jets with 36 yards on 12 carries, and also had 10 tackles on defense.
“We just weren’t able to get anything going from the opening kickoff,” said AMHS head coach Chad Raida. “Our line is very young, but we have to find a way to give our backs some room, and our quarterback time to throw.”
Yates Centers led 26-8 at the quarter and 48-8 at halftime. The game was called in the third period due to the mercy rule.
Altoona-Midway, now 0-2 overall, goes on the road for the first time this season, traveling to Oswego on Friday.

Tomorrow, September 15, the AMHS Volleyball team will travel to Northeast to participate in a Triangular. Play begins at 5:00 PM. Good luck lady Jets!

Monday Sept. 14, the AMMS Volleyball Team will travel to Altamont to play in a tri. The lady Jets will play the first two matches.

ALTOONA-MIDWAY MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL
YATES CENTER – The Altoona-Midway Middle School volleyball team opened its 2020 fall campaign on the road Thursday afternoon, dropping both sets in a closely-contested match with the host Yates Center Lady Wildcats.
Altoona-Midway lost the first set 25-12, and then played nip-and-tuck with Yates Center in an exciting second contest before falling 26-24.
AMMS head coach Nikki Almond missed the opener due to having had possible contact for another individual who tested positive for Covid-19. However, she was happy with the report she received from assistant coach Tracey Winder and from Chary Weilert, who has stepped in to help during Almond’s absence.
“I am super proud of these girls,” Almond said. “I hated not being there, but the report from Tracey and Chary was very encouraging.
“They only had three serving errors, which is already such an improvement from last year. I cannot wait to see what they will bring to the court this season.”
Limited stats were available from the contest. Abby Relph and Olivia Goodwin both had one ace, while Relph and Lexyn Bracken each recorded a dig.
Lady Jets will return to action Tuesday, traveling to Thayer. Coach Almond is expected to return to the squad later next week.

Hello, everyone. As we are coming to the end of another school year, I want to say how much I enjoyed your children. I know these last few weeks have been especially crazy. I am incredibly proud of all of our students, parents/guardians, and staff who worked so hard and so well to take care of business.
I am sad that we did not get to go through these last two months with our seniors. They are a great group of young people, and they will forever be “my kids”. However, I am looking forward to next year. I cannot wait to see our kids again. I believe we will come out of all this even stronger and have a great year.
Again, I want to say thank you for everything. I hope everyone has a great summer and remains healthy and happy.
Sincerely,
Darrin Ashmore
Principal

We are off to a great start to the school year!! We were fortunate enough to receive the Kansas Preschool Pilot grant again this year. Huge thanks to the grant writer and Preschool Director, Mrs. Reazin. This grant helps pay for many things like school supplies, manipulatives, furniture, toys, equipment, cabinets and so much more. “It has been a blessing to receive the grant again,” said Kate Walker, lead Preschool Teacher, “the first year we did not have much to start with, so with this grant we can build a great program up and update many things as well.” Mrs. Walker also noted, “I think I am most excited about the new cabinets and cubbies. They give us so much more storage and they look so much better than the old cubbies.” With the grant the preschool is not only updating the classroom inside but getting an outdoor classroom incorporated as well. The preschoolers have enjoyed getting new toys, activities and play equipment throughout the year. This grant is awarded to many preschools across Kansas and this is the second year for Altoona to receive it. Mrs. Reazin said ”The KPP grant will insure that our preschool stays updated and our three and 4-years-olds are socially, emotionally, and academically ready for Kindergarten.”
