ALTOONA-MIDWAY HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
BUFFALO – The Altoona-Midway High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams had a total of three players tabbed for recognition when the 2023 All-Three Rivers League basketball teams were announced late last week.
AMHS sophomore William Stackhouse was a second-team selection for All-TRL honors, while junior teammate Jacob Meigs was selected to the elite squad’s honorable mention list.
Lady Jet sophomore Emmalynn Pupanek was also chosen as an honorable mention selection among the girls’ all-league honorees.
Stackhouse led the Jets in scoring, averaging 10.7 points per game, and was also the team’s leading rebounder, hauling down an average of 8.3 caroms per contest. The cat-quick sophomore also led the Jets in assists (1.9) and steals (2.9).
Meigs was second on the team in all four of those categories. The lanky junior for AMHS averaged 9.8 points and 6.8 rebounds, while also contributing 2.2 steals and 1.7 assists per game.
“I couldn’t be more pleased for both William and Jacob,” said Altoona-Midway head coach Dave Vance. “Both of these young men exemplify what it means to be all-league. Not only are they hard workers on the court, but also in their studies, and in other activities, they give it their all.
“William led our team in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals. He worked very hard on his game all year and put in extra hours on the weekends to become a better player. William was our team captain.
“Jacob was second on our team in all of those same statistical categories,” Vance noted. “This is a great feat considering he also had the main responsibility of getting the ball up court for us and getting us into our offense. Jacob was a co-captain on our team and really developed leadership qualities as the season progressed.
“You could not ask to meet two finer gentlemen, and I expect to see big things from them on the basketball court and even bigger things from them in their life after basketball,” Vance added.
Pupanek, a tremendous multi-sport athlete for Altoona-Midway, almost didn’t play basketball this season. The talented sophomore was set to be team manager at the start of the season, but after seeing how short-handed the Lady Jets were going to be on players, Pupanek agreed to join the squad.
Coach Jessica Porter and the rest of the AMHS girls were glad she did.
Unofficially, Pupanek averaged 7.6 points per game, despite playing several games in the middle of the season with an injured shooting hand. Pupanek also led the team in rebounding, hauling down 10.0 boards per contest. She also led the squad in blocks and was among the team leaders in steals.
Pupanek rang up an impressive six double-doubles for the year. She was also at her best when the Lady Jets needed her most. In the team’s three victories, Pupanek netted 17 points and 12 rebounds against Peabody; 11 points and 11 boards against Liberty; and 17 points and eight rebounds against Chetopa.
