OSWEGO – The Yates Center High School baseball team – including four
athletes from Altoona-Midway playing through a cooperative agreement –
wrapped up its 2023 spring season by falling to Oswego 3-1 last week in a hard-
fought Class 2-1A Regional matchup.

The Wildcats played one of their most inspired games of the entire season
in the regional game, but were unable to solve a talented pitching display by
Goddard of Oswego. The Indians plated two runs in the third and one in fourth,
while YCHS could only manage a single tally in the sixth inning.

Despite finishing with a 4-16 record, YCHS head coach Jarrod McVey
praised his team for their efforts during the season.

“I’m incredibly proud of the team. They all got better with every practice
and we made huge strides on and off the field as a team,” noted McVey. “The
seniors played hard all year and became good leaders to their teammates and
they all helped lay the foundation for the future success of the Wildcat baseball
program. They are all great young men with bright futures.”

One of the Altoona-Midway players, William Stackhouse, ripped a pair of
singles to account for two-thirds of Yates Center’s offense on the day. Jayston
Rice notched the other hit for the Wildcats and Canon Cavender scored the lone
run.

Goddard pitched a complete game for Oswego. In addition to allowing no
earned runs and only three hits, the hurler struck out 11 while walking only two.

Despite taking the loss, Yates Center’s Emmitt Brittain also had a nice game
on the mound. Brittian went six innings and allowed five hits and three earned
runs while fanning five. Rice came on in relief and hurled a hitless seventh inning.
“In our regional game against Oswego, we played good defense and the
pitching was great, but unfortunately, we just couldn’t get the bats going. We had
a couple innings we couldn’t capitalize with runners on base.”

In addition to Stackhouse, other players from Altoona-Midway participating
in baseball this season were Jacob Meigs, Blaine Collins and Kage Beck.
“It was great to have all four boys from Altoona-Midway play with us this
season,” McVey commented. “They all helped the team and were great
teammates.”
