MOUND CITY – The Altoona-Midway High School volleyball squad kicked off its 2023 fall season Saturday, winning one of five matches here in the Three Rivers League Tournament. The Lady Jets defeated Chetopa for their only victory on the day. AMHS fell in their other four round-robin matches, finishing fifth in their pool with a 1-4 record.

Three Rivers League schools were divided into two pools for the event, with six teams in the “Spike It” Pool and the remaining six squads in the “Block It” Pool. The top four teams of each pool then squared off for one final match to determine the top eight places. In the battle of the two pool champions, Jayhawk-Linn defeated Southeast-Cherokee 25-13, 26-24 to claim the tournament championship.

In other matches in the medal round, Northeast defeated Yates Center for third place; Crest edged Marmaton Valley for fifth place; and Oswego grabbed seventh place by beating Pleasanton. Altoona-Midway competed in the “Spike It” Pool and picked up their first win of the season in convincing fashion, downing the Lady Hornets 25-20, 25-12. AMHS also went to three sets against Pleasanton, but the Blu-Jays managed a 25-21, 20-25, 25-16 triumph.

The Jets were defeated in straight sets in their other matches, falling 25-8, 25-12 to Northeast-Arma; 25-8, 25-11 to Marmaton Valley; and 25-6, 25-15 to Southeast. No individual statistics for Altoona-Midway were made available prior to press time. Members of the Altoona-Midway High School volleyball team include: Chloe Stewart and Summer Raymond, seniors; Emmalynn Pupanek and Jyl Davis, juniors; Eryn Tiger and Chantal Morales, sophomores; Peyton Drake and Brooklyn Collins, freshmen. The Lady Jets are coached by Michelle Stackhouse.

AMHS will open the home portion of its slate on Tuesday, Sept. 5, hosting a triangular with Tyro Christian School and Liberty Homeschool Alliance. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. at Milo Peterson Gymnasium.
