TYRO – The Altoona-Midway Middle School volleyball team was defeated by Tyro Christian
School here Tuesday afternoon. The Saints captured the dual event in straight sets, winning 25-17, 25-14. It was a rematch of the Jets’ season-opener, which was a 25-8, 25-10 win for Tyro.
“This is the second time we've played Tyro this year and we definitely played them better,” said AMMS head coach Chary Weilert. “Our goal is to improve every game and, based on our score this time versus our score the last time we played them, we have improved.”

Altoona-Midway served 64 percent in the first set and 73 percent in the second set. However,
their passing accuracy was far below expectations in both sets. “Tyro is a very good serving team, so that might at least partially explain why our passing accuracy was low,” Weilert noted.
Sandra Morales ended the first set with three good hits and finished the day with four aces,
three of them coming in the second set. Destiny Raymond and Emily Burch also recorded aces
for the Jets.

“I have no doubt that we will continue to improve all season,” Weilert said. “The girls are always excited to play and they learn more and more every time they step onto the court.”
AMMS (1-4) is slated to play Monday in a triangular at Bartlett and Thursday in a home
triangular.
