AMMS Girls

BARTLETT – The Altoona-Midway Middle School volleyball team played tough but couldn’t come up with a victory in either of their “A” matches here Monday afternoon.

The Jets won their opening set of the day against Bartlett Middle School, but was unable to put the match away as the host Braves rallied to win the second set 25-10 and the deciding third set 15-6.

Altoona-Midway next played Mound Valley and fell by a score of 25-17, 25-15.

“Overall, I’m starting to see more and more potential,” commented Altoona-Midway head coach Chary Weilert. “I was elated to see a perfect bump, set, attack performed by our A-team tonight. We may have lost both matches, but seeing them execute a play like that means that they will continue to improve on their passing and their attacks.”

AMMS (1-6) is scheduled to host a triangular event Thursday, Sept. 21. The teams invading Milo Peterson Gymnasium will be Tyro Christian School and Liberty Homeschool Alliance. First serve is slated for 5 p.m.

AMMS vs. Bartlett

The Jets started strong with 84 percent serving in the first game, with Sandra Morales ripping eight aces and adding two good attacks at the net.

The serving fell off in the second set but rebounded in the third set. However, passing accuracy dropped to 13 percent in the deciding game. Kaylor Lampe also served up an ace for AMMS during the match.

AMMS vs. Mound Valley

“We had seven missed serves in the first game, which was basically the losing spread,” Weilert noted. “Our serving was better in the second set (82%), but our passing accuracy was 11 and 18 percent for the two sets.” Morales again led the Jets, firing two more aces and three good net attacks against the Mustangs.

AMMS “B” Results

The AMMS “B” squad was also able to get some court time, first against Bartlett, with the two schools splitting sets. The Jets won the opener 22-25 but rallied to win 25-24.

“Unfortunately, a third set wasn’t played because they only scheduled time for two games for the B-teams, regardless of results,” Weilert said.

Emily Burch finished with five aces, Destiny Raymond notched four, Kaylor Lampe garnered two, while Kenzie Nalley and Leighin Hunsperger each added one ace.

In “B” matchups against Mound Valley, the Jets lost 1-25, 6-25.

“We weren’t able to take all 12 girls to Bartlett tonight due to illnesses and eligibility requirements,” Weilert explained. “We had some B-team girls stepping in for the A-team and we had some A-team girls that helped the B-team. That means they played all 9 sets and by the end they were super tired.”
