CHETOPA – Despite an impressive stretch where they won 10 consecutive points at one point in their opening match, the Altoona-Midway Middle School Lady Jets would end up dropping two Mineral Belt League volleyball matches here Monday.
Altoona-Midway finished the triangular with losses to Chetopa 25-22, 25-3; and to Meadow View 25-6, 25-4.
“During the match with Chetopa, the girls remained positive and made an impressive 10-point comeback towards the end of the first set,” said AMMS head coach Tianne Wambsganss. “However, we could not quite finish out the set to win.
“However, the other sets Monday were not as fun to watch,” the coach continued. “We gave up most of our points due to lack of communication on the court.”
Emily Burch led the Lady Jets with 10 good serves, including two aces, and also had three positive service returns.
Destiny Raymond racked up a whopping 21 good service returns and added seven good serves, two of them aces.
Allie Lockhart chipped in nine service returns and pounded out three aces in four good serves.
Klaire Barlow contributed two serves, including an ace, and three returns to target; Kaylor Lampe and Dionna Anderson each finished with one good serve and four and three serve returns, respectively; while Kenzie Nalley finished the day with six positive service returns.
“Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to get any wins this season, but I am really pleased with the gains the girls have made,” Wambsganss said.
Altoona-Midway (0-14) will have one last chance to break into the win column this Saturday, Oct. 12, when the Lady Jets participate in the 2024 Mineral Belt League Volleyball Tournament, hosted by Altamont Middle School.
The league tournament is divided into three flighted brackets to provide competitive matches.
AMMS will open tournament play at 10 am Saturday against Edna. The other teams in their bracket, Chetopa and Bartlett, square off at the same time. At noon, the consolation and championship games will be played.
