And while the young AMHS spikers were unable to come away with any victories in their four matches, first-year head coach Sharee Bertrand and assistant coach Kyra Chism still saw some bright spots during the day.

“Even though we didn’t come up with a win during the tournament, I saw a great deal of improvement over the span of the four matches we played,” Bertrand said. “I’m optimistic the girls can continue that trend over the course of the season.”

The Lady Jets opened the tournament against Yates Center and dropped a 25-10, 25-10 decision. AMHS was then defeated by the host Uniontown squad, 25-10, 25-6.

The final two matches on the day saw closer results, but still no victories for Altoona-Midway, as the Jets fell to Marmaton Valley 25-13, 25-14 and to Pleasanton 25-16, 25-16.

“We did have some good serves, especially as the day went along, and we started moving as one unit to help with shanked balls,” Bertrand said.

To refer to the Altoona-Midway squad as a young team would be a vast understatement. The Lady Jets have no seniors and only one junior (Keyleigh Clines) on this year’s roster. Rounding out the team are six sophomores and three freshmen.

“We have a young team with mostly first- and second-year players, but I’ve been pleased to see how they are coming together to support each other,” Bertrand noted. “I will be excited to see the team’s growth as the year progresses.”

The Lady Jets will host a triangular on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the friendly confines of Milo Peterson Gymnasium on the AMHS campus.

Altoona-Midway will host volleyball squads from Marmaton Valley and Erie. First serve is slated for 5 p.m.
