CHETOPA – It was almost like starting a new season for the Altoona-Midway Jets here Friday. After essentially a bye week (the Jets had to cancel last week’s game due to low numbers), AMHS also went on the road for the first time this year.
The kinks and rough spots of the layoff were clearly evident, as the host Chetopa Hornets stormed to an impressive 56-8 victory. The contest ended at halftime due to the mercy rule.
“It was one of those games where the more physical team was dominant,” said AMHS head coach Chad Raida. “Chetopa has been in the weight room and it showed.”
Chetopa took control from the outset, roaring to a 30-0 lead after just one quarter, and then tacked on another 26 points before the game was called at halftime.
Altoona-Midway senior Josh Meigs racked up 103 return yards and collected another 81 yards receiving. He also led the Jets’ defensive attack with 13 tackles and two interceptions.
The Jets’ only score came on a 32-yard strike through the air from sophomore Brandon Johnson to freshman Jacob Meigs, who had two catches for 38 yards on the night. Josh Meigs rushed for the two-point PAT.
Johnson was 11 for 25 passing, but suffered two interceptions and was sacked eight times.
“We were unable to get any rushing attack going and Brandon was sacked eight times,” Raida lamented. “We have to find a way to block better!”
Chetopa, which defeated Marmaton Valley 58-26 a week ago, posted back-to-back victories in football for the first time since 2015.
Altoona-Midway (0-3) returns home this Friday to host St. Paul. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Frank Kennedy Field.
