PEABODY - There’s a saying: “Basketball is a contact sport. Football is a collision sport.”

The Altoona-Midway High School Jets were reminded of that axiom here Friday night, as the host Peabody-Burns Warriors exerted their dominance early and often, rolling to a 56-6 victory in the Kansas 6-Man, District 1 matchup.

Peabody-Burns asserted its will early, piling up a 35-0 lead after just one period of play. The Warriors extended that margin to 56-6 at halftime, when the game was ended by the mercy rule.

“Peabody was by far the most physical team we have played this year,” said AMHS head coach Sean Price. “Our young kids took some tough hits and saw very physical play.

“It was a tough week for us, as we are down a few kids and had to play some young guys in spots that were new to them,” Price added, “but the players did a good job of adjusting and giving their best effort.”

Peabody-Burns improved its record to 4-1. The Jets are still seeking its first victory after five tries.

“We have got to cut down on dropped passes,” Price said. “We came out and hit a big play on our first play of game - but then we dropped some open passes to end the drive.

“On the bright side, Chance Carter was very good for us and I felt like Beau (Clines) just keeps getting better on both sides of the ball,” Price said. “Broghan Douglas took a really tough hit and came back in, showing a toughness that I love to see. And Zach Good showed some really good flashes and had a couple of shining moments.”

The Jets’ only score came in the second period when Clines and Chance Mustain connected on a TD aerial. Clines was 8-for-20 for 64 yards on the night, but Price noted those figures include nine dropped passes.

Carter finished with 30 receiving yards on a pair of receptions. Good hauled in three passes for 19 yards. Mustain totaled two catches for 10 yards, including the TD catch, while Douglas added one reception for five yards.

Good picked up 56 yards on the ground off of eight carries, while Clines had one rush for two yards.

Defensively, Mustain and Carter were each in on four tackles, while Clines totaled three. Good and Karter Letterman were in on one stop apiece. Carter also recorded the lone sack on the evening for the Jets.

Altoona-Midway returns home this Friday, Oct. 9, and will host Elyria-Christian School. The ECHS Eagles (2-3) lost their first three games but are coming off of back-to-back wins over Moscow (54-46) and Southern Coffey County (59-26).

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Frank Kennedy Field. It will be AMHS Homecoming.
