MOUND VALLEY – Ah, the sweet taste of victory.

The Altoona-Midway Middle School Jets recorded their first victory of the season here Thursday afternoon, and they did it in incredible fashion – claiming an exciting double-overtime decision over the host Mound Valley Mustangs.

The final score: Altoona-Midway 39, Mound Valley 34.

The wild and woolly contest saw the two teams deadlocked at 27-27 at the end of regulation and 33-33 after the first overtime period. The Jets outscored the Mustangs 6-1 in the second extra stanza to capture the win.

Altoona-Midway led 15-12 at halftime, but Mound Valley stormed back to take a 25-20 lead entering the final period. The Jets outscored the Mustangs 7-2 to force the game into extra time.

Chance Carter was once again the big gun for the Jets, pouring in 23 points, including five during the fourth-quarter comeback, and a total of eight points in the two overtime sessions.

The Jets also got a big lift from Chance Mustain, who finished with 11 points, scoring four big points in the second half and four more in overtime.

Rounding out the scoring for AMMS was Zach Good with four points.

Riggin led Mound Valley with 12 points while Tim finished with 10, including a pair of treys in overtime. Only first names were provided in the scorebook.

Mound Valley won a shortened “B” game 7-2. Caden Sicka scored the bucket for the Jets.

On a disappointing note, AMMS head coach David Batzer was unable to celebrate his team’s big win, as he was forced to miss due to being out of town for an FFA obligation. Serving as coach for the game was Sam Curt.

AMMS, now 1-7, will play its final home game of the season on Monday, Jan. 22, when they host St. Pat’s of Parsons. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. The Jets will close out the regular season with road trips to Edna and Elk Valley, and then participate in the Mineral Belt League Tournament.
